Engagement gifts that aren't a wedding gift

An engagement gift is not a small wedding gift

Engagement gifts confuse people because they look like a smaller version of a wedding gift. They are not. A wedding gift helps a couple set up their home, and there is a gift list, a usual amount to spend and clear rules. An engagement has none of these. There is no gift list yet, the wedding may be two years away, and nobody is sure what is expected. That is actually a useful clue: nothing is expected. An engagement gift is optional, and an optional gift has a different purpose.

What the occasion actually is

An engagement is news, not a list of things to organise. The couple has not moved into a home that needs furnishing. They have made a decision, and they are in a short period when everyone is delighted and nothing needs organising yet. The gift's purpose is to celebrate that happiness, so it does not need to be practical at all.

Celebrate the moment, not the marriage. Think of a bottle that is really worth opening, a dinner for the two of them, or a small, excellent luxury for a weekend that should feel special. A celebration that gets used up suits an engagement best. It is the right size, they can enjoy it now, and it does not compete with the gifts on the wedding list later.

Mark the story so far. A wedding looks forward. An engagement can also look back at the couple you already know. Think of a print of the place where they met, something that refers to their real history, or a frame for the proposal photo that is currently only on a phone. Sentimental gifts work especially well now, because the couple is living through two very emotional weeks.

Help with the planning, lightly. They are about to spend months organising the wedding. A beautiful planning journal or champagne for the day they visit venues will make them smile about the planning. Keep it light. Wedding-planning gifts can quickly feel like pressure. A folder for the wedding paperwork can seem to say "hurry up and get organised".

For the closest few: something close to an heirloom. Parents and the people closest to the couple sometimes use the engagement to give an important object, such as a piece that has been in the family or a serious keepsake. If you are one of them, you already know. If you have to ask whether you are, you are not, and a modest gift is the right choice.

How much

Spend less than on the wedding gift. If the engagement gift costs more than the gift you give later, you create a problem for yourself, because the wedding gift will then need to cost even more. For most friends, spend between the price of a very good bottle and the price of a good dinner. Here, how warm the gift feels matters more than what it costs. The couple is receiving good wishes from everyone. A small gift chosen with real care stands out more than an expensive one.

The card, again

They are receiving dozens of messages of congratulations. The cards they keep say something specific about them, such as something you have always thought about the two of them, said plainly for once. An engagement is an occasion when it is normal to be sincere, so take the chance.

For the gift itself, you are searching for a couple, with a modest budget. Tell us about the two of them and swipe through the gifts.
